Post-harvest terrain & skid-site mapping under canopy

1,200 ha of steep Far North forest scanned with multi-return LiDAR to expose bare-earth terrain, skid sites and slash-prone gullies before the next rotation.

◇ Challenge

Photogrammetry could not see through regenerating canopy; harvest planners were working from 20-year-old contour data with 20 m spacing.

◇ Approach

Corridor-planned LiDAR sorties at 180 pts/m² with terrain-following altitude. Ground returns classified and thinned into a 0.5 m DTM; slope and flow-accumulation rasters derived for slash-risk screening.

◇ Outcome

Harvest engineers re-routed two haul roads and relocated a skid site off a concealed gully. Delivered DTM adopted as the estate's authoritative terrain layer.
